LIMERICK YOUTH DANCE & MA STUDENTS IN CONTEMPORARY DANCE PERFORMANCE

The MA Students in Contemporary Dance Performance at UL join forces with Limerick Youth Dance to present a series of short dance pieces by these young and upcoming performers.

Limerick Youth Dance begin the evening with their first ever dance piece REFLECTIONS. A piece allowing for duets, trios and solos to evolve through structured improvisation, reflecting on the group’s bodily experiences so far and evoking the moment rather than the ideal movement.

Within a very strict structure and set of rules, the young dancers aim to find freedom to choose where to move and what physical and spatial relationships to create in a limited time. Angie Smalis is delighted to join the group on stage, after a rather long break, and proudly present REFLECTIONS to the general public. This is a work in progress which we hope to develop in the second term.

In the second part of the evening, the MA Students present three dance pieces they have been working on throughout the year.

OCTET FOR BODIES
An ensemble choreography based on ‘Body Duet’ originally choreographed by John Scott for irish modern dance theatre. It celebrates the ecstatic feeling of being together, of losing fear and inhibition, and trusting in being together. It is packed with passion, poetry, humour, artistry, grace, fun, vitality – and dance. It will make you think, it will make you laugh, and it will make you remember

SHORE LIIMERICK
SHORE LIMERICK is about gathering – a celebration of the places where we meet and merge, – land and water, performer and audience, art and community, past, present, and future. It is a lyrical choreography, evoking shorelines with water gently lapping and a series of tender meeting and partings.

GROUP SOLO
This piece comprises extracts drawn from solo choreographies created by each of the students. Its structure emerged through a process of experimenting with a number of solo ‘moments’. In many ways it is a mosaic in which each solo has maintains its own unique identity whilst at the same time being an integral part of the overall ensemble choreography.
